Opinion: A new era for the Coast Guard and Alaska
By U.S. Rep. Nick Begich
Last week, Juneau hosted an important symbol of America’s renewed commitment to Arctic readiness: the commissioning of the USCGC Storis.
The Storis is the first new polar icebreaker added to the U.S. Coast Guard fleet in more than 25 years.
For Alaska, this is no small thing. It’s a turning point and marks a new era in maritime and Arctic defense — one powered by historic investments and a clear recognition that Alaska stands ready to lead on the front lines of defense.
In the seven months that I have served in Congress, I’ve fought to ensure the Coast Guard remains equipped, modernized, and mission-ready.
And this year, Congress delivered. With the passage of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, we authorized the largest single investment in the history of the U.S. Coast Guard (nearly $25 billion) to enhance every dimension of Coast Guard operations.
This landmark funding package includes:
$4.3 billion for new Polar Security Cutters, expanding U.S. reach in the Arctic;
$4.4 billion for shore infrastructure and homeports;
$2.3 billion for over 40 new MH-60 helicopters;
$3.5 billion for Arctic Security Cutters;
$1.1 billion for six new HC-130J aircraft;
$816 million for new light and medium icebreaking cutters;
$266 million for unmanned aircraft systems; and
$170 million for next-generation maritime domain awareness tools.
This is a game-changer for Alaska, where the Coast Guard is strategic operator for many communities across Alaska. From enforcing maritime law to conducting search-and-rescue in some of the harshest conditions, our Coast Guard members serve with unparalleled courage and capability. These investments ensure they can continue that work with modern tools, enhanced facilities, and the support they rightfully deserve.
That’s why the Storis matters.
She’s a signal that America is serious about its presence in the Arctic, and that we intend to protect our interests and our sovereignty. While other nations expand their polar fleets, we cannot afford to be caught looking from the sidelines.
With the USCGC Storis, we’ll project American presence in the Arctic and stand ready to answer the call.
As your representative in Congress, I will continue to champion our incredible Coast Guard families. Their mission is national in scope but deeply personal to Alaska. To those who brought this ship to life, who fought for the investment, and who will serve aboard her: thank you. You represent the resilience and readiness that define Alaska.
Storis, welcome home.
