Congressman Nick Begich Invites Athena Fulton as Guest to Joint Session of Congress for Presidential Address

March 4, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. – March 4, 2025, Congressman Nick Begich (R-AK) announced that Athena Fulton will join him today as his guest at the Presidential Address. Athena tragically lost her son to fentanyl poisoning in 2021 and has since been a strong advocate for increasing awareness of the drug’s devastating impact.

“Athena’s story is one of unimaginable loss, but also one of strength and determination. She has courageously shared her son’s story to warn others about the dangers of fentanyl,” said Congressman Begich. “Fentanyl is ravaging families and communities across the country, including in every corner of Alaska. President Trump and the Republican led Congress have taken decisive action to secure our border, stop the flow of illicit drugs, and hold the cartels accountable. I am honored to have Athena join me today because there is more work to be done, and her story reminds us why we must continue to act quickly and with purpose.”

“I am deeply honored to attend President Trump’s address as Congressman Begich’s guest and to bring another Alaskan’s voice to the halls of congress,” said Athena Fulton. “No family should have to experience the pain of losing a child to fentanyl, and I am thankful for the leadership of the President and Congressman Begich in their work to protect American families.”

In Alaska, the fentanyl crisis has touched nearly every corner of the state, from Anchorage to small rural villages, where access to emergency care and addiction treatment is already limited. Fentanyl-related deaths have surged in recent years with law enforcement officials seizing record amounts of the drug flowing into Alaska.

Congressman Begich has proudly supported crucial pieces of legislation including the Laken Riley Act which was signed into law on January 29, 2025 and the Halt Fentanyl Act which passed the House on February 6, 2025.
